A Tale to Remember for Woodland Second Graders

Book cover with hand drawn Wolfie mascot.

Stella, a second grader at Woodland, illustrated this cover for “The Wolfie Wednesday Disaster: Lost Principal.”

Second grade authors at Woodland Elementary School researched and wrote a mystery book after being inspired by Bucky Badger. Their book, “The Wolfie Wednesday Disaster: Lost Principal,” involves losing their principal - Dr. Timothy Doleysh. Wolfie, their mascot, is the hero who sets out across the community to find their principal. On his quest, Wolfie visits local landmarks, including High Cliff State Park and Papermaker Stadium.
The story about how the students became inspired by “The Big Bucky Badger Mystery” by Chris Newbold started at their school book fair. Student Carter R. picked out the book and enjoyed it so much, he shared it with his class. The class, with teacher Stephanie Twombly’s guidance, contacted the author to find out if he wrote other books. Newbold, who now lives in Missoula, Montana, was excited to get a call from the students. As a result, he added a visit to their school to his itinerary for an upcoming trip to Wisconsin. With help from Newbold and Twombly, the students brainstormed for their own story concept. In order to turn their idea into a book, they created a club that met weekly during lunch recess. Each student had a role in the creation of their book and received a printed bound copy to add their own illustrations to. The final books are a tale to remember for these young authors.
